Missy Montgomery, Pharm.D., BCSCP

Missy Montgomery’s earliest example of a woman building a meaningful healthcare career was also one of the most important people in her life: her mother.

A nurse who continued her education through the doctoral level, Missy’s mother demonstrated both commitment to patients and the value of continuing to grow professionally. That example helped shape Missy’s own path into pharmacy and remains an influence on the way she approaches her career today.

Her introduction to home infusion proved equally formative. Missy recalls:

“I had a great experience in home infusion at my previous job with an exceptional boss and coworkers. That impactful experience ultimately led me to open my own infusion company when I moved back home.”

As a pharmacist and owner, Missy understands the technical demands of infusion care. Earning her BCSCP certification is among the accomplishments she is most proud of and reflects her commitment to specialized knowledge in sterile compounding.

But technical excellence is only one side of the work. When Missy describes what has been most rewarding during 22 years in healthcare, she points to both patient outcomes and the relationships she has built:

“The most rewarding part of my career is definitely seeing patients improve in their daily lives with the infusions that we provide and developing relationships with them.”

One of those relationships lasted nearly six years as Missy cared for a young woman through the progression of serious illness and ultimately the end of her life. Over time, the relationship extended far beyond treatment. She became like family.

Like many women in healthcare leadership, Missy has navigated the demands of running a business alongside raising a family. She credits her faith, family, team and network of peers with helping her maintain perspective through those competing responsibilities.

Her advice reflects that foundation:

“If God has given you the vision, then trust that He will provide the way.”

Missy sees continued opportunity to transition appropriate infusion care into patients’ homes and comfortable centers while maintaining the safety and effectiveness complex therapies require.

She also views mentorship and precepting as part of her responsibility to the future. Just as strong examples influenced her own path, she now has an opportunity to pass along clinical expertise and patient-centered values to the next generation.
